Uyuni, Bolivia

Aug 25-28

On the way into Uyuni we stopped off at 'train 66' which Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid stole many years ago.
Uyuni is not a very interesting town, except that it seemed to cater to a gluten free diet ridiculously well. When roaming through the shops I stumbled across GF cookies! And they were YUM! So Laura bought me four packets....gonna get so fat. Then I discovered that the hotel had GF pizza & pasta!!!! Heaven.

The main highlight of Uyuni is the salt flats; a huge 12000 sq km desert of salt! It used to be a lake, but when it dried up it left all its salt behind, creating an endless white desert.

Before we explored the salt flats we stopped off at a train cemetery and took many cheesy pictures. Unfortunately Haysun slipped while climbing off one of the trains and split her head open. So much blood! We quickly rushed her to hospital where she got about 12 stitches and sadly had to miss out on the salt flats.
The rest of us drove off into the desert, stopping first at the "salt museum" which was less of a museum and more of a small room, with a man explaining in Spanish how they extract, process and package the salt to be sold. Thrilling.
Then we hit our first photo stop! The salt mounds.
A short drive from there took us to some pools where the oxygen causes the salty water to bubble. There was also a random tyre which was just begging to be in a few snaps.
Next we went to Fish Island, which was essentially a big mountain full of cacti that we roamed around, getting views of the endless salt flats from the top.
Then came the ever anticipated vast open space for clever perspective photos. We spent at least an hour and a half perfecting these shots.
Our last stop was a little bar in the middle of nowhere that had an assortment of flags on show.
After Uyuni we stopped over for a night in Tupiza, without much time to actually explore it. The only thing we had time to do was climb up to a viewpoint around sunset.
Early the next morning we set off for the Argentinian border!
